Qatar's Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani is in Tehran on Sunday amid regional tensions following the United States killing of Iranian commander and Iran accidentally shooting down a Ukrainian jetliner.

On Wednesday, Sheikh Mohammed said Qatar is closely following developments in Iraq and seeking to coordinate with friendly countries to reduce tensions.

The president expressed hope that during the formation of the Joint Commission on Cooperation between the two countries an exhibition of the capabilities of Iran and Qatar would be held to present investment opportunities.

The emir was scheduled to meet with President Hassan Rouhani in the afternoon, ISNA reported. "The only way to confront this is to depend on cooperation within the region", he said.

State-run Qatar News Agency (QNA) said the talks will focus on "bilateral relations between the two countries and ways of promoting and enhancing them, as well as the latest developments in the region and the regional and worldwide issues of mutual concern".

An official at Qatar's Government Communications Office earlier confirmed the visit to AFP, adding that Sheikh Tamim would fly to Iran for what is believed to be his first official visit to the Islamic republic, following a stop in Oman.
