Many families in Acadiana are marking the start of the Christmas season by picking up a Christmas tree. In 2008 and 2009, tree farmers planted less because they had less.
Gov. Phil Scott visited the Werner Tree Farm to celebrate the beginning of the Christmas season with help from Vermont farmers.
"We don't offer any Black Friday deals, but we will still sell you a great tree", said Eagle Scout Adam Justin.
According to Tebbetts, the choice of cutting and selecting trees in the state of Vermont is nearly endless.
The lighting of this year's tree is set for 5 p.m. Saturday.
"They go out shopping and come by and see the tree lot is open", said Gene.
Jacksonville's annual Christmas tree pick up for disposal usually is the first Monday after New Year's.
The Third Annual Christmas Festival of Trees will be held in Fellowship Hall at Windham Hill United Church of Christ, 140 Windham Center Road Dec. 6-8. "We might not be able to accommodate that kind of tree that you've always had", said Brennan. He orders trees a year in advance but this year one of his suppliers cut his usual order by 25 per cent so he had to find others to top up his order.
Many families that live nearby the lot bring wagons to transport their trees back home.
Friesen said that has resulted in prices going up, and selection of varietals going down.
He said the lack of trees has been a growing concern over the past couple of years.
