Uddhav Thackeray-led Maharashtra govt wins Assembly floor test amidst walkout by BJP

The Uddhav Thackeray-led Maha Vikas Aghadi government of the Shiv Sena-NCP-Congress alliance won the floor test in the Maharashtra Assembly on Saturday.

Following Fadnavis' resignation, the Maharashtra Vikas Aghadi coalition comprising the Shiv Sena, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and Congress chose Sena boss Thackeray as its chief ministerial candidate.

Thackeray was speaking at the floor of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly after Fadnavis was elected the Leader of the Opposition and Congress MLA Nana Patole was elected Speaker. In reiterating his commitment to Hindutva, Thackeray also took a swipe at Devendra Fadnavis, hinting at that the latter didn't keep his "promise" to Sena. I have learnt a lot from you.

BJP members, led by former CM Devendra Fadnavis, argued that the two-day special session was in violation of norms. Most people made nice speeches about me here.

Fadnavis quoted a famous couplet and said: "Thinking the tide has ebbed, don't you dare build your house on the coast, for I am the sea, and I will come back".

Soon after the results came in, Thackeray reminded the ally BJP of its promise to share the CM's post.

"Those who were in opposition for several years are now with me to form the government whereas friends (BJP) have gone away to sit on opposition benches in this House", he said.

"Fadnavis ji, we were friends once and shall always remain so".

"I am still with the ideology of "Hindutva" and won't ever leave it", the chief minister told the Assembly. "Had you listened to us, I would have been sitting at home watching today's developments on TV", Thackeray said. However, the BJP MLAs walked out of House after Walse Patil ordered head count on motion of confidence.

"I won't call you [Devendra Fadnavis] an Opposition leader, but I will call you a responsible leader", ANI quoted the Shiv Sena president as saying. Pro tem speaker Dilip Walse Patil urged the members to maintain order in the House and allowed former Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to speak. His father Bal Thackeray wielded the "remote control" over the first Sena-BJP government during 1995-99 but never assumed a position in the government.

Meanwhile, Fadnavis was elected as Leader of Opposition in the state Assembly.
