Hundreds of mourners gather in northern Mexico to grieve slain Americans

Mormons attacked at border

Teen walked for 6 hours to find help after mother was killed in Mexico...

But her daughter was found alive and uninjured in the vehicle with bullet holes all around her. Witnesses said the baby was found in her auto seat, and it looked like her mother had moved her to the floor of the back seat for protection.

Angry kin of nine American citizens massacred in a suspected gangland ambush in northern Mexico urged the government to accept U.S. help to destroy drug cartels that one grieving relative described as being "as bad or worse than Isis".

That was when 13-year-old Devin Langford showed up at the outskirts of La Mora - exhausted after a 14-mile trek through rugged terrain for help.

Mckenzie, who suffered a graze on her arm in the attack, walked for some time in the dark before she was found several hours after the other children were rescued. She had also left to find help after her brother did not return. Relatives from La Mora tried to reach them before that but were turned back by gunfire.

She was found alive in a bullet-ridden auto on a dirt road in Mexico's northern state of Sonora following the brutal gang attack on Monday.

The vehicles were traveling between the Mexican states of Sonora and Chihuahua when authorities said members of a criminal group, possibly a drug cartel, opened fire on them in two separate locations.

But shortly after leaving, all three cars were ambushed at different points by gunmen near Bavispe.

At one point, one of the cars got a flat tyre, Kendra Lee Miller said.

Mourners filed past to view the bodies and pay their final respects to Dawna Ray Langford, 43, and her sons Trevor, 11, and Rogan, 2.

He eventually walked for about 14 miles, arriving six hours later in the tiny hamlet of La Mora where he lived and broke the news of the ambush. "Everyone please pray", said Miller.

"All of a sudden, bullets just rained from above, from on top of a hill, down on top of them", Langford said.

According to the young survivors, "once the firing stopped, these men came off the mountain and pulled all these kids that were still alive", Langford said. Their remains were burned to ashes except for a few bones, enough to identity all five of them were in the vehicle.

Six children and three women in all were killed in the attack on the convoy of three SUVs.

Johnson also was killed in the attack.

When the shooting stopped, the gunmen approached the vehicles and pulled the surviving children out, gesturing and telling them in Spanish to leave the area, said Lafe Langford, a family member. She was gunned down.

A third vehicle, 18 km behind, was shot up and burst into flames, killing Rhonita Miller and her four children. -Mexican dual citizenship on Monday, in an attack that spread outrage in both countries and increased USA pressure on Mexico to rein in drug cartels.

In 2009, Benjamin LeBaron, an anti-crime activist who was related to those killed in Monday's attack, was murdered in 2009 in neighboring Chihuahua state.

Her daughter Crystal said everyone in northern Mexico's extended Mormon community appeared to know Dawna. His 9-year-old sister, Mckenzie, who was shot in the arm, took off after her brother and was later found lost and wandering in the desert by search parties, according to a relative's Facebook post.

"His jaw is actually broken".

"It's all a nightmare", Kenneth Miller said.

Devin was in his mother Dawna's auto when their vehicle was attacked, Kendra said on Facebook.
