Matt Bevin, Kentucky's Trump-loving governor, loses to Democrat Andy Beshear in closely-watched race

The only poll showing Beshear with a lead was conducted by Targoz Research, a Nashville organization that offered to conduct the polling for $2,750 - a pittance compared to the resources most surveys require. He exploited Bevin's feud with teachers over pensions and education issues, which resonated with voters. "The Democrats nominated a moderate, who's dad was a moderate, who didn't talk about impeachment or Trump, and who acts like a Republican".

Republican Daniel Cameron was elected Kentucky's next attorney general Tuesday - the first African American to ever win a race for the office and the first Republican to do so in over 70 years.

Doubling the hurt, Democrats gained control of both chambers of the legislature in Virginia for the first time in 25 years, turning a formerly red state solid blue, according to projections by USA media, including the New York Times. Suburban voters turned out in big numbers to back Democratic candidates, continuing a trend of flipping once GOP-friendly suburbs.

The state is often a battleground during presidential elections, and the Democratic result will be seen by many as a blow to Trump's chances next year.

Results are coming in after Tuesday's elections, with major wins for Democrats in several crucial states.

He must contest the election to receive a recount of the votes. The Intercept's Ryan Grim warned that Republicans are "totally gearing up to steal the KY governor's election". The election result was a significant setback for Trump, who remains relatively popular in Kentucky.

Democratic 2020 front-runner Joe Biden, who attended get-out-the-vote efforts in Virginia on Monday, said GOP candidates there avoided being tied to Trump.

Trump's 2020 campaign manager, Brad Parscale, said in a statement that the president "just about dragged Gov. Matt Bevin across the finish line" while helping Republicans win several other statewide races. The president held a campaign rally in the state last week alongside Reeves.

Virginia also held elections for its next governor on Tuesday. Lawmakers approved a proposed constitutional amendment this year that would create a new bipartisan commission empowered to draw legislative and congressional maps, but Democrats would have to sign off on it again next year before it could be presented to voters.
