Flu season is here, doctors urge the community to get vaccinated

CDC: Too Few Pregnant Women Getting Flu, Tdap Vax

We've officially entered fall.

Lehigh Valley Health Network will administer free seasonal flu vaccinations for a 22nd straight year for adults and children six months and older during two community sessions in November. However one in three of these women did not get the shots, the survey found.

Koon said the hospital receives regular updates from the Center for Disease Control in Atlanta.

The CDC actually recommends that people get vaccinated by the end of October. Past year was the longest flu season in history, ranging from October to May.

He said there's a big push for the flu shot this year. Last flu season, Lexington had five deaths that were related to the flu and 506 confirmed cases of the flu. If this is the case, you'll want to be sure you're vaccinated to prevent the chance of getting sick.

According to Angelia Allen, Public Health Director for Ravalli County, "We only get reports on the individuals that go into the doctor and test positive for the flu". Many employers and schools also offer it on a rolling basis (if they haven't provided it already, check in with your HR department for details).

The offer is only available for a limited time.

In addition to getting your flu vaccine, IDPH recommends following the 3 Cs: clean, cover, and contain.

The CDC website says, "CDC recommends all pregnant women receive flu vaccine at any time during pregnancy, and whooping cough vaccine (Tdap) early in their third trimester, during each pregnancy". For non-pregnant people ages 2 to 49 years old without underlying medical conditions, the vaccine is available by nasal spray instead of injection.

Branswell explains, "The strain selection committee concluded the H3N2 and B/Victoria viruses needed to be updated because the ones used in the Northern Hemisphere vaccine didn't match the strains of those viruses that are now dominant".

It's never too late to protect yourself and those around you.

Myth: The flu vaccine can cause severe side effects. These allergies could include but are not limited to gelatin, antibiotics, or other ingredients. Some are squeamish around needles, others question the effectiveness, and some even believe the flu shot gives you the flu. They will also be offering the high-dose flu vaccine for individuals 65 years and older. Whether that be washing your hands as often as possible, drinking a sufficient amount of water or most importantly, getting the flu shot, your peers will thank you and so will your body.

"Although some vaccination programs may need to adjust their timing to accommodate a somewhat later than usual delivery of vaccine, health professionals at all levels of government are working together to minimize any potential impacts", wrote a spokesperson in an email.

"Because the timing of the onset, peak and end of flu seasons varies from year to year and can not be predicted, it is hard to say when is the best time to be vaccinated for any one season", the CDC's website states. He stopped by Globe Pharmacy in Greenville to get ahead of the flu season.
