Similar demonstrations were taking place in Berlin, Sydney, Amsterdam and Madrid on Monday, and organizers said more were expected in up to 60 cities around the world, including NY and Washington, D.C., as part of what they called an "international rebellion".
British police on Tuesday began clearing central London streets blocked by climate protests, cutting demonstrators out of their tents and restricting them to tourist landmark Trafalgar Square.
Leigh MP Jo Platt has given her backing, posting a picture of herself holding an Extinction Rebellion flyer on social media along with a message saying she recognised there is a climate emergency and activists were "doing something about it".
In New York City, protesters staged a "die-in" in the middle of Wall Street in downtown Manhattan on Monday morning as part of what they called a "funeral procession for the earth". The demonstrations were organized by the group Extinction Rebellion to demand action on the climate crisis.

"Today, we're ready to take an action that seems extreme, but for us it seems like a realistic action", said the woman, who wore a harness and hard hat as she stood on the bridge's structure.
Boris Johnson's father has told Extinction Rebellion protesters that their work is "extremely important" - less than two days after his son labelled them "uncooperative crusties". According to Police officials, they have already arrested 280 demonstrators during the protest. "You know, we only get one planet, and so we're here to try and defend it".
The following day, Extinction Rebellion called on any arrested protesters to refuse bail conditions in an attempt to fill police cells across London. "They're just gathered in the park in a smallish group".
The rallies came as German Chancellor Angela Merkel defended climate protection measures her government is due to approve on Wednesday but which critics have condemned as unambitious.
Activist Mike Gumn, 33, from Bristol, camped overnight wearing a suit and a flat cap to show the protest "is for everyone".
Earlier Monday, hundreds of activists with the same movement blocked a central square in Paris.
"This action is necessary in order to prevent the demonstrations from causing serious disruption to the community", police said.
A few hundred other protesters camped out in 40 tents at the gates of Spain's Ministry of Ecological Transition.
