We Don't Know Where Mugabe Will Be Buried -Family Members

Mnangagwa meets Mugabe family representatives

Several meetings held between government and former President Robert Mugabe's relatives have reportedly failed to resolve the impasse over where the late nationalist leader would be buried, sources have revealed.

Mugabe, a guerrilla leader who rose to power after Zimbabwe's independence from Britain and governed until he was ousted by the military in 2017, died in Singapore on Friday, aged 95.

But most of Zimbabwe's national heroes who fought against the minority white minority are buried at the Heroes Acre shrine in Harare.

Cde Matemadanda said he has not yet withdrawn what he said about the late Cde Mugabe during the infamous interface rallies.

On Thursday, Zimbabweans would pay their respects to Mugabe at a Harare football stadium, where the body would lie in state before being taken to his rural home in Kutama, 50 miles (85km) from the capital, the family spokesman added.

Mnangagwa, senior officials and other Mugabe family members were at the airport to receive the body.

Even after his body arrived home, though, Mugabe's final burial place was still far from clear.

A government minister said on Tuesday the burial was still planned for Sunday, after a state funeral on Saturday.

A plane bringing the body of Robert Mugabe back to the country landed at the main airport named after the former president at 3.25PM on Wednesday.

"No one in the Mugabe family has the right to decide who attends; they are too small for that, not at this juncture".

The body was later taken to Mugabe's Harare villa, known as the Blue Roof for its blue pagoda-style structure, where family and supporters gathered to mourn. Mugabe's first wife, Sally, is buried at Heroes' Acre and a vacant plot reserved for the former president is next to her grave.

When pressed on where Mugabe would be buried, Leo Mugabe was non-committal.

"The delegation appreciated government support from time of hospitalization and treatment of former President and founding father, Cde Mugabe, right up to the time of his passing on".

The government and his family also reportedly involved in discussions over the location of his final resting place. "They have dented his legacy, it was not an easy thing", a family spokesperson said. A programme would be announced by the home affairs ministry later in the day, he said.
