The 75-year-old actor reportedly crawled into the wreckage, but was unable to get the seatbelt unbuckled on the child's vehicle seat. The cause of the accident remains under investigation.
A fellow Samaritan (identified by CNN as Monica Jackson) climbed through the other window of the vehicle to help unfasten the belt from the other side, and Trejo was finally able to pull the baby out.
"The only thing that saved the little kid was his auto seat", Trejo was overheard telling a photographer on the scene.
Trejo said that while the firefighters were working to free the woman, he was trying to distract the boy from the scene.
The actor said that he has worked with special needs children before so he knew how to keep the little boy calm.
"He was panicked, and I said, 'OK, we have to use our superpowers, ' and so he screamed, 'Superpowers!' and we started yelling, 'Superpowers, '" Trejo recounted.
