Clay accuses Ocasio-Cortez of unfairly playing "the race card"

Congressional flamethrower and avowed socialist Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., on Thursday abruptly backed away from her insinuation that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is a racist.

"President Donald Trump's top economic adviser praised left-wing Democrat Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, after the political rivals found common ground in urging the Federal Reserve not to worry about low unemployment triggering inflation".

They were among a larger group of Democrats who visited Texas border facilities last week and returned reporting overloaded, fetid facilities and said detained women spoke of being told to drink from toilets and eat unhealthy food.

Democrat representative Ocasio-Cortez hit out at House Speaker following Pelosi's scolding of her and her "squad" during a closed-door meeting with lawmakers in the Capitol.

Pelosi said the House will soon work on one bill by Escobar tightening oversight of the Homeland Security Department and barring most family separations.

A key progressive voice, Rep. Ro Khanna of Calfornia, who is friends with Ocasio-Cortez, told CNN that it is time to move on and rally around the Speaker.

"No one has texted me", Ocasio-Cortez said after a lengthy vote series on the House floor. I said what I'm going to say on the subject. "We need to support the Speaker and she is the most successful woman in American politics in history". If they allow themselves to be bullied into, for example, watering down a resolution on anti-Semitism or letting her drive the conversation of the Green New Deal, they have no one to blame but themselves.

Allies of the foursome swiftly came to their defense, suggesting Pelosi was marginalizing the women of color who are the new face of the party. "And a lot of New Democrats and Blue Dogs did that today", tweeted Saikat Chakrabarti, the chief of staff for Ocasio-Cortez. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn.; Ayanna Pressley, D-Mass.; and Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich.

The moderate members want Chakrabarti gone, a not unreasonable request, given that he is threatening to launch primary challenges to some incumbents. "To try to compare this to what African Americans went through?". "So, to even insinuate that I, or any other member of the New Dems, would promote policies that are racist and hateful or ones that would negatively impact communities of color is deeply offensive and couldn't be further from the truth". "The people suffered, our fearless men and women at Border Protection, the kids who these Democrats pretend they care so much about".

"Can we just talk about the issues we're dealing with?"

"We respect the value of every member of our caucus", she said.

Trump stuck up for Pelosi on Friday after freshman Rep. "We have kids in cages", said Rep. Pramila Jayapal, D-Wash., co-chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, who said she was frustrated by the ongoing situation. He said by not toughening immigration laws, Democrats have "created the very magnet" that attracts migrants to the U.S. And then, he said, the Democratic-controlled House "cowardly sits in the corner, doing nothing" to address the problems that result.

Ocasio-Cortez doubled down on her pushback, implying that Pelosi's rhetoric might be motivated by racial animus. "We are not getting the accounts of migrants ... what they are experiencing", she said. It has no place in a civil discussion.
