Davis has worn No. 23 for all seven seasons he played for the New Orleans Pelicans. Los Angeles surrendered Brandon Ingram, Lonzo Ball, Josh Hart and three first-round draft picks in the deal. This could help offer the Lakers a bit of lineup flexibility as they would ideally like to try and maximize budding star - and fellow forward - Kyle Kuzma's role alongside Anthony Davis and James.
"I like playing the 4, I'm not even going to sugarcoat it", Davis responded, who turned to his new coach, Frank Vogel, midway through his answer. "And so me being a 26-year-old I went straight to Instagram and that's when I saw it".
While the jersey swap is on hold for the time being, Lakers fans won't have to wait long to get their first glimpse of Davis with his new team as he is set to be introduced at a press conference on Saturday afternoon.
We probably won't get All-Pro DeMarcus Cousins but it would not be absolutely shocking if the Los Angeles Lakers send three players to the NBA All-Star Game in February. I'm excited about it. Just put five guys out there that fit best with each other, and go out and win. All the players teaming up and kind of spreading that talent throughout the league - it's going to be a fun season. I checked in with him all the time. The Lakers were also able to re-sign Rajon Rondo, JaVale McGee and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope.
Ironically, it was most recently owned by Josh Hart, who was part of the package sent to New Orleans for Davis. He returns to the Lakers after averaging 9.2 points and 8.0 assists per game with Los Angeles a year ago.
And now they have an opportunity to do it all again. Obviously, we've had a chance to play and be teammates previously before this.
Cousins revealed earlier this week the two had discussed reuniting. I checked in with [Leonard] all the time.
"When he made that move, we had the space that we had, and he can attest to this but he and I and LeBron talked so much about, 'Hey, how do we want to optimize that space?'" Pelinka said.
