Newcastle took a big step towards Premier League survival by winning 1-0 at Leicester on Friday night (Saturday NZT), with Ayoze Perez scoring the first-half victor for Rafa Benitez's side.

Leicester went close when Ben Chilwell exchanged passes with James Maddison before hitting a low strike that Martin Dubravka kept out. They began it very poorly and were rooted at the bottom of the table at one stage, but slowly and surely they eased themselves out of the danger zone and the longer the season has gone on, the better the football they have played. With the players we have, we'll work with them to open up the idea of where we can be better in that situation.

Newcastle are looking to win consecutive away games against Leicester in the top flight for the first time since September 1959 under Charlie Mitten.

Leicester coach Brendan Rodgers made a double change on 72 minutes, with Kelechi Iheanacho and Nampalys Mendy coming on for Demarai Gray and Wilfred Ndidi.

Rodgers' tenure as manager got off to a losing start with defeat at Watford, but the Northern Irishman seems to have lifted the mood at the club in recent weeks having secured four wins from five games in charge.

Rafa Benitez's men stayed compact at the back after getting the opener, while the hosts lacked the creative thrust to force clear chances in the Newcastle 18-yard area. "You have to give credit to the players who worked hard", Benitez said.

Their only clear opening came in the 80th minute when Jamie Vardy lifted the ball over the bar. "Maybe with another manager we would have struggled even more".

Leicester City's Youri Tielemans, left is tackled by Newcastle's Fabian Schar at the King Power Stadium. Only in 1994-95 (10) and 2001-02 (9) have they lost more home Premier League games in a single season. - Newcastle has now picked up 16 points away from home in the Premier League this season (P17 W3 D7 L7), as many as it earned in the whole of the 2017-18 campaign on the road.
