Israel has been calling on Russian Federation to use its influence in Syria to prevent the Islamic Republic of Iran from securing a lasting presence in the country. After visiting Moscow, the Israeli leader reported on March 3 that the sides agreed to continue the coordination of actions between the Russian army and the Israel Defense Force, as well as reach the common goal - withdraw foreign armies from Syria that had been deployed there after the start of the civil war.
Netanyahu said he had asked Putin to help Israel find Baumel's remains two years ago, that he was grateful to the Russian leader for his help, and that Baumel would be buried in Israel later on Thursday.
More than 400,000 Israelis live in West Bank settlements as part of its military occupation of the territory, while a further 200,000 live in settlements in occupied east Jerusalem over which Israel has already implemented full sovereignty. Chills. I, too, felt chills.
"Our military together with Syrian partners found the place of his burial", Putin said of Baumel.
Netanyahu added that Baumel's father was no longer alive. Baumel was born in New York City but grew up in Jerusalem.
Baumel, who was born in the U.S. in 1960 but immigrated to Israel, had been missing since what is known as the Battle of Sultan Yacoub in a Lebanese village of the same name near the Syrian border. He said that their remains had been transferred to Syria after the 1982 battle.
Speaking in an interview with Channel 13 on Friday, Netanyahu said that in his opinion "all the [West Bank] settlements must remain under Israeli sovereignty" and that he had forwarded his position to US President Donald Trump.
The recovery was welcomed by the United States, Baumel's birthplace.
The family of Zachary Baumel had to wait 37 years to bury their son. "Welcome home, Zachary, and Rest in Peace". The Kremlin said earlier this week the two would "compare notes" during Netanyahu's brief meeting with Putin, their third in recent months. Israeli commanders and intelligence agencies were in "constant contact" with the Russian army throughout, he said.
