The order concerns all people living or working in four zip codes of Williamsburg, northwest Brooklyn, where some residents oppose vaccines on religious grounds - although neither Jewish texts nor local Jewish authorities advise against vaccination.

While none of the infected children attend public schools or childcare programs, the Health Department is still in the process of gathering the information necessary to identify any locations where these children may have exposed others.

America's largest urban area, New York City, has taken the extraordinary move of making vaccinations mandatory for some people who may have been exposed to the measles virus in a hard-hit, predominantly Orthodox Jewish neighborhood in Brooklyn. Measles is so contagious that 90 percent of all unvaccinated children and adults who come in contact with an infected person will contract the virus.

NY introduced a mandatory programme and declared a public health emergency this week after 285 confirmed cases of measles... But unvaccinated children and adults pose very real dangers to infants too young to be vaccinated, to people with compromised immune systems (such as those undergoing cancer treatment), and to pregnant women whose unborn babies can be infected. She added that a true understanding of vaccination requires more than surface-level explanations found in the media. Measles can be a serious infection that results in pneumonia, swelling of the brain, hearing loss and death. Over the years, these vaccines have saved many lives, while causing few to no side effects.

"When individuals are not vaccinated, there is a high likelihood of catching the disease", Sheffield said. There is no excuse to use a public health issue - an outbreak we are suffering from - as a platform from which to spew poisonous anti-Semitic rhetoric. California also removed the personal reason exemption in 2015 following an outbreak of measles at Disneyland with 145 reported cases. More than 465 cases have been recorded nationwide since the start of the year. She suggested that maybe parents should be compelled to homeschool their children, emphasizing the risk to the community.

"It lasts in the air for hours after that person leaves the room", Amler said. It is so easy to forget how powerful vaccines are when you have never seen another suffer from debilitating or deadly diseases, like smallpox or polio. Similarly, autism is more common in those who have epilepsy and that children aged 18-24 months who have autism begin to regress if epilepsy appears, like what happened to McCarthy's son. Since Sept 30, the area has produced 285 measles cases, city officials said at a news conference on Tuesday, including 246 children. "The vaccine has been proven safe and effective in preventing the spread of measles for decades and we have evidence". Close monitoring, plus education and outreach to further boost vaccination rates, are what now make sense for the Garden State, he and others said Wednesday.

"I join the physicians of our state in urging all parents to immunize their children on time as per the (federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) schedule and not just in times of crisis", the rabbi said.
