He has expressed interest in staying with the Patriots and recently made it clear that he wants to help the team win Super Bowl ring No. 7.
Bennett heads to New England in exchange for a fifth-round pick in the 2020 draft. With that trade set to be finalized, tight end Martellus Bennett is interested in coming out of retirement to join his brother in New England, a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter.
Shortly after that interview, Philly.com's Jeff McLane reported the Eagles, who have been trying to trade Bennett, will release him if they can't find a taker. He has 63 sacks over his 10-year career. I actually want a pay raise at this point.
He is scheduled to earn $6.2 million in base salary next season with an additional $1 million available in per-game roster bonuses.
"But at the same time, I still know that I'm one of the best players in the NFL".
Bennett was the Eagles' best defensive end in 2018 and is under contract for two more seasons.
This is a chess move by Belichick and the Patriots, who game the free agent. Some rumors came out early last week that Bennett was being shopped around at the NFL Combine, but it seemed like a standard cap casualty situation. Flowers led the Patriots with 45 pressures.
Bennett isn't a long-term answer for the Patriots.
Bennett had a limited role prior to Barnett's injury past year and was asked to rush from the right side of the line after spending much of his career on the left side. He recorded 34 tackles and nine sacks.
