Trump Holds El Paso Rally Followed by 'Ingraham Angle' Interview

"It is correct that Customs and Border Patrol officials would more barriers on the U.S./Mexico border", Tapper said.

Dan Crenshaw said Monday that former Texas Democratic Rep. Beto O'Rourke should answer if he would remove the border wall in his hometown of El Paso if he had the ability to do so.

Trump chose El Paso as a historic crossing point where, he says, walls have eradicated an out-of-control influx of criminals from Mexico and made the city a model for what could happen elsewhere on the border.

But it's not just the Federal Bureau of Investigation at odds with Trump, Tapper noted. A barrier was built in El Paso almost 10 years ago, and the introduction of that barrier, Trump said, allowed El Paso to undergo a profound transformation from a risky border city.

El Paso's Republican mayor, Dee Margo, said the city had been safe for years before the wall was built. Former El Paso state Representative Beto O'Rourke will be speaking at this event and one of the highlights will be the Baby Trump balloon that will be flying at the event.

Trump has failed to persuade Congress to fund his wall project, with Democrats accusing the president of using the whole issue to boost his political base, rather than fix the complex border situation.

In a release announcing Monday's events, O'Rourke's camp cast the protest as an effort to "show the country the reality of the border - a vibrant, safe, binational community that proudly celebrates its culture, history, diversity and status as a city of immigrants". Both sides face a Friday deadline to reach an agreement or face another possible shutdown - Trump also has threatened to declare a national emergency to address what he describes as a security crisis.

But on Monday O'Rourke downplayed the impact his speech would have on a potential presidential campaign. And he hasn't given a major rally speech since his unsuccessful but close run for Senate against Republican incumbent Ted Cruz. On Tuesday, O'Rourke promised a 2020 decision by the end of the month.

President Donald Trump is expected to hold a campaign rally at 9 p.m. ET today.

"With the president being in El Paso, it provides an opportunity to test a message that's very different than President Trump's message", communications consultant Hector Nieto said.
