Spotify finally rolls out to India

"Not only will Spotify bring Indian artists to the world, we'll also bring the world's music to fans across India". Apple Inc launched in 2015, followed by Alphabet Inc's Google Play Music in 2017 and Amazon.com Inc's Prime Music a year ago.

Having said that, it's largely expected that most users will start off by signing up for the 30-day trial, and decide whether they wish to pay for another digital service or not.

Spotify also competes with Apple Music which has been around in India since 2015. Additionally, the company recently faced an issue with Warner Music, which disallows the company from bringing music by artists like Katy Perry, Led Zepelling etc.to the country.

Despite official unavailability in India, Spotify is quite popular in the country with users resorting to VPNs to access the platform.

For subscriptions, the payment modes are limited to Visa and Mastercard credit and debit cards while users can make use of Paytm and UPI payment methods to buy the pay-as-you-go plans.

Spotify is also offering a Premium subscription to students at a special price.

"India has an incredibly rich music culture and to best serve this market, we're launching a custom-built experience".

While earlier the Spotify app was not available for download in India, now the same can be downloaded on both iOS and Android devices. Another feature is "Free with total control" that has been introduced for the first time, allowing smartphone users to play every song on demand on Spotify Free.

The company has a monthly subscription plan of Rs 119 and if a user needs to pay for only one month, the company will charge Rs 129.

Warner Music had approached the Bombay High Court asking to block Spotify from being able to play music from its catalog on the streaming service, Bloomberg reported on Monday.

In addition, One Plus, Anheuser-Busch InBev and GoUSA will be Spotify's exclusive advertising launch partners in India.

Globally, Spotify has 207 million active users and 96 million paid subscribers.

"WMG instructed Warner/Chappell Music (WCM) to file for an injunction in an attempt to leverage WCM's local Indian publishing rights, to extract concessions in WMG's global renewal negotiations for musical recordings". Compared to the US, Spotify Premium is available at $10 (Rs 700 approximately), while family plan can be availed at $15 (Rs 1,000 approximately).

In January this year, Spotify had inked a global content deal with T-Series that gave it access to the latter's entire Indian song catalogue including Bollywood and regional movie soundtracks, as well as a non-film albums and emerging artist content. Spotify also doesn't offer top-up plans in the US.
