Now, according to ABC News and CNN those calls were not to his father, as Democrats and some media outlets had hoped but to NASCAR CEO Brian France and real estate developer Howard Lorber.

If investigators could establish that Trump Jr.'s calls had been to his father, that might suggest they'd discussed the meeting and that Trump therefore knew about Russia's offer of help to his campaign, the theory ran. At the meeting, Trump Jr. was expecting a Russian lawyer linked to the Kremlin to share dirt on Clinton, he later told Congress, but she instead pressed him on a USA law levying sanctions on Russia for human rights abuses.

Both men have close ties to President Donald Trump and actively supported his campaign during the 2016 election. Trump Sr. appeared to confirm as much in a tweet on Thursday night.

"This Witch Hunt must end!" he added.

In a tweet he wrote: 'Has anyone heard from Adam Schiff? "I wonder how many more false leaks will pop now to keep their dreams alive???"

CNN first reported Thursday that the calls to blocked phone numbers prior to the meeting were between Trump Jr. and two business associates, citing records provided to the Senate Intelligence Committee.

Democrats, led by Rep.

"In a 2018 memo outlining the areas of the Russian Federation investigation that went unexplored, Schiff wrote that "(b) ased on the timing of these calls, the committee must determine whether some of these calls may be between Trump Jr. and Donald J. Trump, including calls concerning the Trump Tower meeting".

But Trump Jr. and other participants later said no dirt was provided, and the meeting turned out to be about the Magnitsky Act.

The information came to light recently and could answer one of the key questions over the meeting Trump's eldest son set up to get Russian dirt on the Clinton campaign.

Democrats had zeroed in on three phone calls Trump Jr. had with blocked and private numbers days before and on the day he met with Russian lawyer Natalia Veselnitskaya at Trump Tower on June 9, 2016.

He wrote in a memo a year ago that "based on the timing of these calls, the committee must determine whether some of these calls may be between Trump Jr. and Donald J. Trump, including calls concerning the Trump Tower meeting".

Phone records show that Trump Jr. called back Agalarov at 4:31 p.m.

Previously, some Congressional Democrats speculated that Don Jr. might have shared details of his meeting the lawyer with his father, then-presidential candidate, Donald Trump.

Democratic members of the House Intelligence Committee pushed for information on the blocked numbers for more than a year.
