Memphis Grizzlies to trade Marc Gasol to Toronto Raptors

Memphis Grizzlies center Marc Gasol (33) shoots a three point shot from the corner during a game against the Denver Nuggets at FedExForum. Both teams have yet to confirm the deal.

The Memphis Grizzlies may ultimately decide they would have more options to deal Conley closer to the draft. He is averaging 15.7 points, 8.6 rebounds and 4.7 assists per game this season, but is shooting below 45 percent overall.

The Hornets and Grizzlies have engaged in trade discussions concerning Gasol, with the NBA's Thursday 3 p.m. trade deadline looming. Our young players, the Jaren Jacksons and Ivan Rabbs, we want them to taste winning. He was a part of a core group of players that helped shape the identity of this franchise on and off the court and were embraced by the City of Memphis. Wright is a nice wing to add, and extra picks are never bad, but a second-rounder from the Raptors isn't exactly that exciting. Particularly early on in the year, his defensive effort has been notable. He spent 11 seasons with the Grizzlies and is the franchise's all-time leader in points, rebounds, blocks and made field goals.

It's a power move for a Toronto team looking to improve its roster as it vies with Philadelphia and Milwaukee, among others, in the Eastern Conference.

The 34-year-old Gasol is making $24.1 million this season and has a player option worth $25.6 million for next season.

Wright, 26, was averaging 6.9 points, 2.6 rebounds, and 2.2 assists in a depth role with the Raptors this season.

Jonas Valanciunas had been sidelined since December 12 (Dec. 13, PHL time) with a dislocated left thumb.
