Veterans of the Democratic establishment, unsettled by Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's lack of deference to seniority and party unity, have cautioned the freshman lawmaker to direct her potent social-media attacks toward Republicans rather than centrist Democrats. In addition to working with the Marijuana Policy Project, Riffle has also worked as communications director former Rep. Keith Ellison and a legislative aide to former Rep. John Conyers.
Ocasio-Cortez, a first time candidate, delivered a shocking upset previous year when she ousted 10-term incumbent Rep. Joe Crowley in New York's 14th congressional district. She's repeatedly stated her support for legalization and advocated to fix the harms caused by the War on Drugs.
Members of Congress tell Politico on and off the record that Ocasio-Cortez will have an ineffective legislative career if she continues to criticize party leadership.
The Democrat socialist has not responded to explain why she did not offer worker's compensation between March and April of past year.
They also quoted Democrats, such as Rep. Emanuel Cleaver (D-Mo.) saying things like this: "I'm sure Ms. Cortez means well, but there's nearly an outstanding rule: Don't attack your own people".
Her appointment would be a victory for progressives fighting to curb Wall Street's clout in Washington and inside the Democratic Party itself, Politico reported. "We just don't need sniping in our Democratic Caucus".
"This is basic stuff, especially if you hold yourself out to be the champion of workers", added the Democrat. "It's not the same thing, at all", she said.
Another Democrat said they'd like to see the rising self-described Democratic socialist star give her fellow colleagues a chance before "passing judgment".
It was a given that the overwhelming majority of Republicans on the Hill would balk at Ocasio-Cortez's politics and her willingness to call the President out as a racist.
"I'm focused on my job", Ocasio-Cortez said.
