U.S. President Donald Trump has visited the Martin Luther King Jr. memorial in Washington to honor the slain civil rights leader on the national holiday.

"Good morning everybody. Great day, it's a lovely day", Trump said. Handsome day. Thank you for being here.

Joined by Vice President Pence, Trump made a brief appearance at the Martin Luther King, Jr.

"Our humanity is literally on the verge of digressing to two Americas and becoming the dis-United States of America", she said.

"We recommit ourselves to the advancement of equality and justice for all Americans, and to the full realization of (Martin Luther King Jr.'s) worthy dream", it read. Day at the Trump International Golf Course in Palm Beach, Florida, and only tweeting a video message about the civil rights leader.

On Sunday, Pence told CBS's Margaret Brennan on "Face the Nation", in a discussion about ending the government shutdown which was sparked by a dispute about the border wall, that "the hearts and minds of the American people today are thinking a lot about it being the weekend we remember the life and work of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr". His aides have said he does not plan to travel to his Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach, where he typically spends winter weekends, until the shutdown is over.

President Trump does not have any events scheduled to honor King, according to NBC News White House correspondent Geoff Bennet. Plucking this specific quote out of the many great lessons MLK gave us is like a hungover college student trying to find the most vague scholarly opinion to support a totally batsh*t thesis statement.

King's daughter, Rev. Bernice King, said in the service Monday honoring King that Washington is in a state of crisis.

In 2015, President Barack Obama volunteered at the Boys and Girls Club in Washington. In 1994, the U.S. Congress honored that community spirit by designating the King holiday a national day of service.
