The No. 1 Huskies had not lost a regular season game since an 88-86 overtime loss at Stanford in 2014.
Before the season began, Auriemma joked that he often wished his teams would lose a game in the regular season because it would force them to regroup and find a way to bounce back.
"What is disappointing for me (is) not that we lost", Auriemma said, per The Associated Press.
"I think people sometimes get this impression that UConn, we have this magic dust and our kids are all ideal players and all great students, they all shoot the ball great and every time we shoot it, it goes in and it's just a matter of how much we're going to win by", Auriemma said of his 11-time national champion program.
Kim Mulkey, the coach of the Lady Bears, admitted the game between the two teams is good for women's basketball, as both teams have a good history.
The Huskies had the lead just once in the game and that was when Crystal Dangerfield scored in the opening minute of the game to make 2-0. But Baylor seemed to scoop up every necessary carom, and a rested CT team looked a step slow all night, shot just 29 percent from the field, and never found a rhythm in the halfcourt set. Juicy Landrum scored 11 points, while Lauren Cox added nine points, seven rebounds and five blocks.
While Napheesa Collier (16 points, 11 rebounds) and Katie Lou Samuelson (12 points, 11 rebounds) posted double-doubles, it wasn't enough to keep CT from losing in regulation for the first time in 209 games. "We'll enjoy this, but we are now focused on Lubbock, Texas", Mulkey said after the win, according to ESPN program director David Smoak. But the two seniors were a combined eight-of-34 shooting. The Huskies last lost consecutive games in 1993, spanning 937 contests.
UConn: Auriemma's team was coming off tough wins at Oklahoma and California. A world where Stanford can beat Baylor, Baylor can beat UConn, UConn can beat Notre Dame, means an NCAA tournament where nothing is certain.
The loss at Baylor was the fifth road game in a six-game stretch for UConn that started with an 89-71 win at then-No. "I would think they would suck if they didn't score 52 points in the paint". "If we play every game like that, there's no telling where we may end up".
In their last game before starting American Athletic Conference play Sunday at Houston, the Huskies shot only 29 percent (20 of 68) for their lowest point total this season. Baylor (10-1) opens Big 12 Conference play Sunday at Texas Tech, AP reports.
