US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo warned of regional escalation after Iran conducted a missile test

"Iran has launched missiles that are capable of carrying multiple warheads, including a nuclear weapon", Hook confirmed to the Washington Free Beacon while talking to reporters aboard Secretary of State Mike Pompeo's airplane en route to Brussels for North Atlantic Treaty Organisation meetings.

British Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt called the missile test "provocative, threatening and inconsistent" with the resolution and said Britain was determined "that it should cease".

Iran said on Sunday it would continue missile tests to build up its defences and denied this was in breach of United Nations resolutions following US allegations that Tehran had tested a new missile capable of carrying multiple warheads. "Iran's continued testing and proliferation of ballistic missiles shows that the Iran deal has not moderated the Iranian regime as some had hoped".

Citing an unnamed defense official directly familiar with the initial data from the launch, CNN downplayed the test, reporting that it did not appear to display any capabilities that the United States was not already aware of, adding that "it did not pose a direct threat".

He also criticized the allies for suggesting the US was acting unilaterally when comes to key countries like Iran and China.

Iran's military has cited 2,000 km as the current missile range, and said USA bases in Afghanistan, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar, plus US aircraft carriers in the Gulf, were within range.

"Missile tests. are carried out for defence and the country's deterrence, and we will continue this", Brigadier-General Abolfazl Shekarchi, spokesman for Iran's armed forces, was quoted as saying by the semi-official Tasnim news agency.

The US says it needs crippling economic sanctions against Iran to curb its regional influence, which Washington frames as state sponsorship of terrorism.

The Iranian regime has just test-fired a medium range ballistic missile that's capable of carrying multiple warheads.

Resolution 2231 was passed in 2015 to endorse the freshly-signed deal between Iran and leading world nations (known as JPOC). "We condemn these activities, and call upon Iran to cease immediately all activities related to ballistic missiles created to be capable of delivering nuclear weapons".

Firing back, the Iranian military said all their missile tests are meant to boost national defense by deterring potential attackers.

Iran has repeatedly said its missile program is purely defensive and denied that its missiles are capable of being tipped with nuclear warheads, or that the country has any intent of developing nuclear weapons through uranium enrichment.

Zarif recalled that the U.S. re-imposing of unilateral sanctions against Iran was already a violation of Security Council Resolution 22-31. It also calls all member states to refrain from actions that undermine implementation of JCPOA commitments. The agreement has the backing of most major United States allies, apart from Israel, though many in Israel's defense establishment supported it.
