Qualcomm has also made significant upgrades to the Snapdragon 855 Mobile Platform's camera module - it now includes a new Spectra 380 ISP for faster computer vision capabilities, that will apparently enable "cutting-edge" computational photography and video capture features while offering 4x savings in power usage.
"We're proud to work alongside innovative partners like Verizon and Qualcomm Technologies to deliver a smartphone that will fundamentally transform how people work and play", said Justin Denison, Senior Vice President, Mobile Product Strategy and Marketing at Samsung Electronics America. Samsung has stepped up to the plate. Samsung, Apple's chief rival in the high-end smartphone business, has said that it will have a 5G phone on Verizon, AT&T and other networks by the first part of next year.
Aside from multiple camera setup, display notches, and all whatnot, the In-screen fingerprint reader has in the past year become a major feature of the mo-range and Premium smartphones, partly because they take up more space than the conventional rear fingerprint sensor. We'd assume that this will tie in (at least partially) to the new GPU that will be included in the Snapdragon 855. Verizon's 5G network now exists in only a small handful of cities. Tonight Qualcomm are set to announce their reply to Huawei with the Snapdragon 855. The chip maker says that 2019 will be all about 5G and most flagships or premium smartphones will be powered by Snapdragon 855.
He said that the full chip systems will be able to switch between 4G and 5G and will support both millimetre-wave and sub-6 gigahertz bands, the two frequency spectrums used by 5G networks.
He continued, "This time next year, we'll be talking about the incredible services, devices, and experiences powered by 5G". But we already know that the new chipset will feature support for an embedded fingerprint sensor - something OnePlus already features in the 6T - an improved AI engine, and an updated image signal processor that adds intelligence to smartphone cameras.
More information on the Snapdragon 855 should be released over the next few days during the Snapdragon Technology Summit.
For the first time ever in a Qualcomm chip, an NPU dedicated to machine learning tasks and related to AI will be present.
Qualcomm has also introduced a new ultrasonic sensor for under-display fingerprint sensors. Snapdragon 855 offers a special Snapdragon Elite Gaming that combines various features to boost mobile gaming experience on high-end smartphones.
