The crash occurred after Valbuena and Castillo left the University Stadium at Caracas after playing a game for the Cardenales de Lara.
The Orange County Register says the auto they were in reportedly hit a rock on the road in the state of Yarucuy. "Four suspects found with Valbuena's and Castillo's personal belongings were arrested by police, state governor Julio León Heredia wrote on Twitter".
"We are living through a awful tragedy", the Cardenales said on Twitter. Known for his affinity for bat flips and an ebullient personality, Valbuena was a popular clubhouse fixture in his decade-plus as a Major Leaguer - as evidenced by the outpouring of emotional messages from former teammates on social media.
"We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of former Angel Luis Valbuena and former Major League Baseball infielder José Castillo", the Angels tweeted. He had a career.226 batting average with 114 home runs and 367 RBIs during his Major League Baseball tenure. He spent time with the Seattle Mariners, Cleveland Indians, Chicago Cubs, and Houston Astros before his stint with the Angels.
Primarily a third baseman who also saw action at the other three infield positions, Valbuena hit a career-high 25 homers for the Houston Astros in 2015.
Castillo, 37, last appeared in the majors for the Astros in 2008. Jose's time with the Astros was brief, but he also had a positive impact on those around him.
Former infielders killed in crash while leaving game in Venezuela. "Our thoughts and prayers are with their families and friends".
