Bush passed away on Friday at his home in Houston, Texas.

Vice President Mike Pence and Republican Senate leader Mitch McConnell also spoke.

Bush's service dog, Sully, was brought to the viewing, too - his main service these last months since Barbara Bush's death in April being to rest his head on her husband's lap.

A 54-year-old Texan who served in the U.S. Air Force during "Operation Desert Storm" was waiting for the train to pass through Pinehurst so he could pay his respects to his former commander-in-chief.

As three former presidents and President Donald Trump looked on, former President George W. Bush eulogized his father as "the brightest of a thousand points of light".

A plane carrying the late president from Washington arrived in Houston Wednesday evening and his flag-draped casket was taken to St. Martin's Episcopal Church, where his body was to lie in repose overnight so the public could file past and pay their respects.

Glasser, who described the late Senator John McCain's funeral as a "meeting of the resistance" was back again for Bush's sending off, this time to remind her followers how "extraordinary" a thing it is for a country to have two presidents from one family.

Trump proclaimed Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2018, as a National Day of Mourning in remembrance of former President George H.W. Bush. He is lying in state in the Capitol Rotunda and will be buried Thursday in Texas after a state funeral service Wednesday at Washington National Cathedral.

Trump and his wife Melania had few interactions at the service, only briefly shaking hands with former President Barack Obama and his wife Michelle.

The train travelled about 110km in two-plus hours - the first presidential funeral train journey since Dwight D. Eisenhower's remains went from Washington to his native Kansas 49 years ago - to the family plot on the grounds of Bush's presidential library at Texas A&M University.

"I think he was one of the kindest, most generous men", visitor Marge Frazier said.

But tributes in recent days have focused on the former president as a man of integrity and kindness who represented an earlier era of civility in American politics.

A humble hero of World War II, Bush was just 20 when he survived being shot down during a bombing run over a Japanese island.

Bush's grandson George P. Bush will give the other eulogy.

Bush died last week at 94.
