Republicans, who charge that the Democratic Party has departed from its pro-Israel bona fides point to Tlaib and Omar as proof. "Because this is about electing the jury to impeach @POTUS and I will make a heck of juror", Tlaib said in a tweet aimed at U.S. President Donald Trump.
In a year when a record number of women are running for Congress and races across the country include more candidates of color and more gay, lesbian and transgender candidates, Tlaib and Omar add to the diversity of newcomers to the electoral process.
Ellison was the first Muslim elected to Congress, in 2006. Omar, a refugee from Somalia, is the first Somali-American Muslim woman to hold public office. She won the Democrat primary for the seat in August with around a third of the total vote share.

Tlaib, the daughter of Palestinian immigrants, said in recent interviews that she favors a one-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, as opposed to a two-state solution that would establish a Palestinian state alongside Israel.
"Trump was a bit of a Bat-Signal for women in general of being engaged", she says, talking while out on the campaign trail in Detroit.
