18-year-old Canadian RJ Barrett sets new record in Duke debut

Coach K isn't happy with a play

Barrett scores 33, No. 4 Duke blows out No. 2 Kentucky in season opener

His point total set a new Duke record for most points scored by a freshman in a season opener, breaking the previous record of 25.

Kansas looked like the No. 1 team for, oh, about two hours because Zion Williamson happened.

Although the Blue Devils' early lead quickly silenced Big Blue Nation, Duke will need a vocal leader on the court to keep everyone's heads in check for ACC road games.

The Stanford graduate transfer made little impact in the opening 20 minutes as the Blue Devils pulled away.

Duke was led by its sensational freshman trio of R.J. Barrett, Cam Reddish and Zion Williamson.

Kentucky only got as close as 27 until the waning moments.

Barrett finished with 33 points, four rebounds and six assists in the game. That's the Kentucky Wildcats. Most teams don't have that kind of combination, but it's clear Kentucky needs to improve dramatically to keep up with the nation's top teams.

And to complete the package as Duke's go-to glue guy-and making a strong case for why he would be a suitable fifth starter for the Blue Devils-White's ability on offense was smooth and versatile.

"I gotta give them credit", Calipari said of the Blue Devils.

Kentucky: Tyler Herro was the only other player to reach double figures.

They cut a 10-point deficit to 90-87 when Kyle Ahrens made a 3-pointer with 34 seconds left and could have gotten within two after Kansas's Devon Dotson missed one of two free throws with 15 seconds to go. The Wildcats were outscored 60-38 in the paint.

TMZ Sports spoke to Dahntay Jones, a former Duke All-American, and he says Zion's dominating season-opening performance against Kentucky last night was evidence of greatness to come.

The Duke Blue Devils were the talk of the basketball world on Tuesday evening, as Mike Krzyzewski's bunch utterly destroyed a highly-touted Kentucky team in front of a national audience. When he goes up against teams that play the 2-3 zone, Williamson is going to have to prove he can consistently hit the outside jumper.

Having a captain that can provide valuable minutes on both ends of the court will be crucial for the Blue Devils, as a lineup composed primarily of freshmen could run into some mental errors in truly hostile environments.

Kentucky hosts Southern Illinois in the Wildcats' regular-season home opener Friday night at 6 p.m.
