'We will not stand down,' VP Pence warns China

Dairy farmers say new trade agreement with U.S. has ‘sold them out’

Maritime dairy farmers say they've been sacrificed

Even before the announcement of the new United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), the agricultural industry was feeling optimistic.

China says it deplores a controversial new clause in the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement that calls on the countries to notify each other if they enter into trade talks with a "non-market" economy.

"The recent announcement regarding the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement is positive news for NY farmers".

There are deeper issues in the dairy industry that a trade deal won't fix, chiefly the global milk glut and a declining demand.

"It makes it very hard to do business on the buyer and seller side when it is not under their control", said Gordon. "The U.S.is setting itself up as the rule-writer, judge and jury", she said. In May, a pound of bagged milk could cost one dollar but might be $1.25 per pound a month or two later.

Speaking at the conservative think tank the Hudson Institute, Pence said that "the Dragonfly app. will strengthen Communist Party censorship and compromise the privacy of Chinese customers".

It's not only American dairy farmers who are getting more access to the Canadian market.

"It built an assurance that Canadian powdered milk would be the cheapest on the world market", he said, adding that this action distorted an otherwise cheap product.

Ireland said there was a lot of concern and uncertainty about the future of the dairy industry in Canada. Canada's new so-called de minimis level will rise to $150 from $20 for customs duties, and $40 for sales taxes, providing a price break for Canadians who purchase items from USA online retailers. Currently, the USA has access to 3.2 percent of the Canadian dairy market, and USMCA would increase access to 3.6 percent. While New York Farm Bureau is still reviewing the details of the agreement, we believe this is a step in the right direction for New York agriculture, including the state's dairy farms.

Darigold President and CEO Stan Ryan said in a statement that the new agreement would preserve and expand the partnership with Mexico while also enhancing access to the Canadian market. "To me, it's the most important word in trade". These provisions allow Canada, Mexico and the United States to challenge one another's anti-dumping and countervailing duties in front of a panel of representatives from each country.

While China does maintain global efforts to influence overseas Chinese and has been accused of several high-profile cyber raids on American computer systems, there has so far been no public evidence of the sort of influence operations the US has said Russian Federation carried out in 2016.

Every time there is a trade deal, "we've lost", Groenendijk said.

Mr Pence also said China had deployed anti-ship and anti-air missiles on islands it is building in the disputed South China Sea, despite promises not to militarise them.

While touting USMCA as a good deal for Canadians by securing access to its largest trading partner and the largest market in the world, Trudeau acknowledged farmers' sacrifices. We don't know that yet, but there are market gains, so that is promising.
