‘Venom’ Launches to $80 Million, ‘A Star Is Born’ Draws $42.6 Million

Venom Obliterates October Opening Weekend Box Office Record with $80M

'Venom' sets October record with US$80M; 'Star Is Born' soars

The dire reviews seem to have done nothing to keep folks away from Venom over the weekend as it pulled in $80 million, breaking the opening weekend record for October by around $25 million (set by Gravity in 2013).

For comparison, Spider-Man Homecoming - the title character of which shares a universe with Venom in the comics - opened to £9.4 million in 2017.

But despite the film's opening weekend success, Rotten Tomatoes has the movie ranked at a low 32 percent with an average rating of 4.5 out of 10.

That movie went on to earn £30.7 million overall in the United Kingdom, and though it seems unlikely that Venom will go quite that high, bosses will no doubt be relieved that the negative buzz from critics didn't affect ticket sales.

Coming in at No. 2 this weekend is the music-heavy drama "A Star Is Born".

Falling to third place this weekend is "Smallfoot" bringing in an estimated $14.9 million in its sophomore weekend. At the global box office, the film has collected 56 million dollars.

Cooper's "A Star Is Born" remake, also starring Lady Gaga, has been hailed by critics and pegged as an Oscar front-runner. "Let's get a little extra highlight over here on the side, '-because you know I like to pop that cheek out", she said.

So it should come as no surprise that the movie's soundtrack is already topping the charts, which isn't such great news if you released an album last week.
