Tom Hardy says his favourite scenes didn't make it into Venom

It's noncommittally mediocre and, as a result, forgettable. Sony Pictures appear to have lavished a nine-figure sum on, and are now hoping to establish an entire cinematic universe on the back of, a character who looks like someone drizzled with Creme Egg filling onto a bin bag.

Cam: They know this was made by Sony and not Marvel right? Clearly, this didn't happen, but I'd argue that Venom's creative team (Fleischer and writers Jeff Pinkner, Scott Rosenberg and Kelly Marcel) still have a decent handle on what makes Venom tick. "The tone of this movie is all over the place, and it's the inconsistencies ... that are Venom's real problem".

"It's easy to watch a film like this and wonder why the likes of Hardy and Ahmed - great actors in so many other things - are wasting their talent". Tom Hardy stars as Spider-Man's arch-nemesis, in a movie without Spider-Man.

One of the harshest reviews is filed by the New York Post, which calls this assembly-line product "a disaster on every level, from the hatchet job writing to the horrid performances" that puts "its focus on juvenile humor instead of heart or action".

Brock becomes infected by a symbiote - an alien parasite - and becomes Venom.

The second, and far more entertaining sting comes at the end of the credits and it's an extended preview of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, the animated Spider-feature that Sony is set to release this Christmas.

"I took him right out there, and played with it and had a lot of fun". To Gleiberman, Venom was little more than a treat for the eyes that failed to electrify its audience and spent too much time watching Venom "originate".

- Perri Nemiroff (@PNemiroff) October 2, 2018Tom Hardy's performance in #Venom is either Johnny Depp in the first PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN or Chris Klein in STREET FIGHTER: THE LEGEND OF CHUN-LI.

"I was surprised at the length of it", Hardy admitted to Variety's Marc Malkin on the carpet for the movie's premiere in Los Angeles.

Now how will the film fare at the box office?

Film critic Katie Walsh argued that Venom managed to feel fun despite being messy and freakish. Exhausted of the same old bland Marvel Cinematic Universe offerings?

Tribune News Service: It's a mess, but wow, is it ever a fun, fascinating mess.

"That's been misunderstood. What I'm trying to say is, the question was [what] scenes I was most excited to shoot...and I was like, there's a bunch of stuff that hasn't made the movie". One of the main reasons for Venom's longevity is that he has an actual character arc that unfolded over time.

Williams' character Anne is a lawyer who dates Eddie before finding out he carries the Venom mantle.
