"The farmers of India had unparalleled faith in him... traders and industrialists preferred to work with Sardar Patel because they felt here was a stalwart who had a vision for India's economic and industrial growth", said Mr. Modi.
As a tribute to India's freedom icon Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel on his 143rd birth anniversary, Prime Minister Narendra Modi along with BJP cadres will inaugurate the State Of Unity, the world's tallest statue at 182 metres. Named "Statue of Unity", at 182 metres, it is nearly double the size of the Statue of Liberty in the U.S., and four times the size of Christ the Redeemer in Brazil. At the same time, a team of Jaguar fighter aircraft will fly over the statue and a team of MI-17 choppers will shower rose petals.
Two super-fast elevators will be installed at the statue's core to take visitors up to the statue's chest to view a panoramic scene of the surrounding countryside, including the Sardar Sarovar Dam with its huge reservoir, and dozens of villages. Near the statue, the Prime Minister will also unveil the "Wall of Unity" which has been created with the earth samples collected from various states across the country.
They alleged that people's hard-earned money is being wasted on projects like Statue of Unity though several villages of the area are still deprived of basic facilities like schools, hospitals and drinking water.
The statue is more than twice the size of New York's Statue of Liberty and also dwarfs the 128-metre Spring Temple Buddha in China, the world's second-biggest statue. The dues add up to Rs 12 crore, Indian Express reported.
The Prime Minister will address the gathering.
The statue has been built using over 70,000 tonnes of cement, 18,500 tonnes of reinforced steel, 6,000 tonnes of structural steel and 1,700 metric tonnes of bronze, which was used for the outer cladding of the structure, according to the government statement. Set against the backdrop of the scenic Sardar Sarovar Dam, the statue is perched on top of the small river island of Sadhu Bet, situated only 3.2km from the Sardar Sarovar Dam.
- Stubble burning: Pollution and stubble burning was also mentioned in today's edition. "I am sure every Indian will take pride in telling the world about this great accomplishment". The Statue of Liberty is 93 meters high, including its pedestal.
L&T CEO and MD SN Subrahmanyan told PTI, "The Statue of Unity, apart from being a symbol of national pride, and integration is also a tribute to India's engineering skills and project management abilities".
The viewing gallery with space to accommodate up to 200 people at a time, will have a view of the Satpura and Vindhyachal mountain ranges, which also form the point where Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and Maharashtra meet.
As part of the effort to make the region around the statue a tourist spot, many projects like Valley of Flowers and Tent City have been developed.
