One bettor at the Westgate Superbook was so sure of the Vikings win, he confidently placed $9,000 on Minnesota to win outright in an effort to win $450. In his first career road start, Allen demonstrated the athleticism and fearlessness of a ball carrier who allowed the Bills to forget about the quarterback mobility they lost in trading Tyrod Taylor.
"If there were 53 guys in this state that thought we could win the game, they had to be in our room because no one else thought it", then-Redskins head coach Norv Turner said at the time. The rookie QB had been harrassed in his first two games of action, including last week's loss to the Chargers, which was his first National Football League start.
The 6-foot-5, 237-pound Allen, who would never be mixed up with diminutive Vikings Hall of Fame scrambler Fran Tarkenton, threw for 172 yards and one touchdown in the first half and slipped out of the backfield for 37 yards rushing and two touchdown runs.
Allen would finish 15-of-22 for 196 yards and a touchdown, and he also added two rushing touchdowns.
During halftime, the late Dennis Green was inducted into the Vikings' Ring of Honor. C Russell Bodine, who started in place of Ryan Groy, limped off with leg cramps in the third quarter. Groy, who had moved to LG when Vlad Ducasse was injured, shifted back to the middle as Ducasse re-entered.
Vikings: In addition to Cook and DE Everson Griffen (knee), backup TE David Morgan (knee) and PR Marcus Sherels (ribs) were held out. RT Rashod Hill (ankle) limped off in the second quarter and was replaced by rookie Brian O'Neill.
As such, it is understandable that Bills players were pretty hyped after the victory. The line was 16.5 or 17 points pretty much everywhere, and the Vikings seemed to play it cautious with a couple key players' injuries as they face a short week in Week 4.
