Plane quarantined at JFK after passengers fall ill

The passengers remained on the airliner for more than three hours and medical screens were done on all 521 passengers. A government source with knowledge of the situation said there was no evidence of security or terror issues, and USA officials believe the illness was caused by food poisoning, while passengers suggested it could have been a bad flu virus.

Shortly before 10:30 a.m., Emirates Airlines said in a statement via its official Twitter account that only 10 passengers from Dubai had fallen ill.

Emirates confirmed to People that the Centers for Disease Control staff and Port Authority officials from NY and New Jersey were on the scene when the plane arrived.

A NY police counterterrorism division tweeted it appeared to be a "medical situation".

An Emirates Airbus flight from Dubai has been quarantined at New York's John F Kennedy International Airport after numerous passengers reportedly fell sick during the flight.

It's understood around 10 travellers are ill on the plane, which landed around 9.15am local time. The airline says the passengers were getting medical attention "as a precaution".

Experts from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention were also on the scene.

Passengers were able to watch news coverage of the ordeal on the plane's on-board televisions.

The remainder of the passengers were allowed to leave and clear customs, the airline said. He said "early indications point to that as a possibility".

Footage showed the plane, surrounded by emergency vehicles, sitting on the tarmac.

"Some tests came back inconclusive on other viruses, which is common", de Blasio spokesman Eric Phillips said on Twitter, adding that the tests were being re-administered.
