Tennis great Boris Becker described Reynolds in a tweet as "one of the last icons in Hollywood", while Lord of the Rings star Elijah Wood lamented the "passing of a legend".

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that about 790,000 Americans have a heart attack every year, meaning that on average, one heart attack occurs every 40 seconds.

Burt Reynolds never stopped working. He told Vanity Fair that he had "certain regrets and issues I've lived with".

Other celebrities took to Twitter and Instagram to pay their respects.

Reynolds' stardom was galactic.

"He was one of my heroes", Schwarzenegger wrote. He showed the way to transition from being an athlete to being the highest paid actor, and he always inspired me.

He did become famous enough to make frequent appearances on "The Tonight Show", leading to his most cherished film role and to his greatest folly.

Reynolds was reborn in Boogie Nights in 1997 as a faintly bizarre, but weirdly charming silver-fox porn producer who has to sweet-talk Mark Wahlberg's handsome kid into appearing in one of his dirty movies, and he has big dreams of creating a kind of pornography with a real narrative.

Overall, Reynolds' career spanned more than 200 credits across film and television. A wry humor and a warm heart defined this wonderful man. After that, it was never the same, and he will be sorely missed.

"The other 57 days were really fun and a lot of laughs, but there were three tense days there in the middle where Mark was fighting with Burt, or in the film".

Singer Reba McEntire said: "My good friend has started a new journey".

Reynolds earned an Oscar nomination and reminded the world what a good actor he was.
