Diego Godin REJECTS chance to make late move to Manchester United

Diego Godin has snubbed an approach from Manchester United to stay in Madrid

Their attempts to land primary targets Toby Alderweireld and Harry Maguire have hit a brick wall.

Manchester United's pursuit of Atletico Madrid defender Diego Godin has been emphatically ended before it even began on transfer deadline day.

Manchester United are reportedly chasing a deal to sign Diego Godin.

As recently as this morning in his pre-match press conference for United's Premier League opener at home to Leicester tomorrow night (8pm), Mourinho revealed he was not confident a new defender would come in.

The Uruguayan centre-half would have been able to move for just £17.5 million this summer and it's easy to see why Jose Mourinho viewed him as a short-term solution to the problem in the heart of the Red Devils' back four.

However, although no there has been official confirmation of a new contract, United were told that Godin has agreed a new contract - and would remain at the Wanda Metropolitano with Diego Simeone's side for at least one more campaign.

Shortly after, though, and the rumours simmered down with reports that Godin had personally rejected a move and that he had in fact signed a new contract in Spain.

United are in the market for a new centre-back but have faced frustration over their top targets.

You've got to feel for United supporters right now.

He's been an ever present, solidifying himself as one of the finest defenders in the world.

There was a feeling that United needed to spend big this summer after not only coming up short to Manchester City last season but by an eye-watering distance at that. Have your say in the comments section below.
