Jones is accused of punching 35-year-old, Sandor Szabo, who is from Florida, and was in NY for a wedding in Long Island.
Jamill Jones, 35, of Kernersville, was charged with assault after turning himself in to police, officials said.
When the man allegedly banged on Jones' vehicle, the second-year Wake Forest coach reportedly punched him.
Jones coached at FGCU from 2013-2015.
He's said to be "a rising college basketball coaching star" at Wake Forest University. Szabo died just before 3 p.m. later that Tuesday in a NY hospital.
Jones was with his family after the court session, his attorney, Alain Massena, told the AP. He was arraigned today on a misdemeanor assault charge and released on his own recognizance after entering his plea.
Szabo fell back, hit his head on the pavement and lost consciousness, according to police.
Jones allegedly punched Sabor Szabo in the face at 1:15 a.m. ET on Sunday morning after a confrontation.
Jones sent his condolences to the family of the tourist via a statement from his lawyer.
Wake Forest has not responded to the Daily News' request for comment. "Sandor was super outgoing, friendly, and an incredibly smart businessman", his company, What If Media, said in a Facebook post Wednesday.
"He was always upbeat, positive, kind and caring", the post continued. "He was a really good person". He was placed on life support and later died.
Jones, of Kernersville, North Carolina, was arraigned Thursday evening in Queens Criminal Court, and he has been charged with third-degree assault, a misdemeanor in NY, according to Massena.
