The patients, Israeli medical officials said, were not the walking wounded of the seven-year-old Syrian civil war but children with chronic health problems coming across the frontier for a day's treatment in a hospital in northern Israel. Israel worries Assad could let his Iranian allies entrench near its lines or that Syrian forces may defy a 1974 Golan demilitarization.
While Russia and Iran have both deployed forces to Syria to help prop up Assad's government, their interests do not always converge. "These can clash or it can align", said the Israeli official on condition of anonymity.
On the other hand, Shoigu said that the U.S. is trying to destabilize the situation in Syria and to prolong the crisis in it, indicating that Washington hasn't allocated any money to help the Syrian civilians who have been affected by the war.
"Every visit like this is an opportunity for us to act together and try and stabilize the situation in our region and increase security and increase stability", Netanyahu said.
Russian officials had no immediate comment on the meeting.
Russian Federation is an ally of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, but has turned a blind eye to frequent sorties by Israeli aircraft against targets of Iran and the Hezbollah militant group in Syria.
On June 24, Israel's military said it launched a Patriot missile at an incoming unmanned aerial vehicle, which turned away unharmed. The interception set off sirens on the Golan and nearby Jordanian border.
According to SANA, the Israeli air strike was delivered at military positions near the settlements of Hodor, Tell Kurum and Jbaa. He said a stray drone was "not common".
But on Tuesday, Israel also signalled openness to eventual ties with Syria under Assad, a tacit acknowledgement that he was re-consolidating power as he beats back the rebels.
The IDF spokesman confirmed that a Syrian UAV was intercepted by a Patriot missile.
Earlier on Wednesday, the Israeli army said the downed drone may have been on an intelligence mission.
Israel has threatened to open fire at any Syrian government forces that try to deploy in a demilitarised Golan buffer zone set up under a 1974 United Nations -monitored armistice.
