As a precautionary measure, Mumbai police have stopped all traffic above and below the bridge till the green signal from the railway authorities. Rescue operations continued to save those trapped under the debris. The fire brigade rushed into action and efforts are on to clear the debris as well as do away with any dangerously hanging parts of the foot overbridge. Six people have suffered injuries in the mishap. The overpass connects the eastern and western portions of the Andheri railways station, and the collapse stranded passengers during the morning rush. Instead, commuters travelling from Andheri East to West are advised to follow the Bisleri junction - Teli Galli - Surve Chowk - Andheri subway - SV Road route, the Mumbai Traffic Control Branch said.
Police official Yaibhav Nigade said at least five people who were walking on the bridge were injured and hospitalised.
A team of the National Disaster Response Force also reached the spot.
The incident triggered a blame-game between the railway and the BMC and rekindled the debate among commuters of prioritizing the existing railway networks before implementing the grandiose Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train project. Several areas in the city are waterlogged, including Dombivali, Ghatkopar, Thane, Kurla, Dadar and Sion stations.
Upon hearing the marvel of Sawant, Union Railways Miniter Piyush Goyal rewarded the motorman with Rs 5 lakh. Along the drenched tracks of the Western Railway, just as he was nearing the crowded Andheri station at 7.30 AM, the middle-aged personnel showed an exemplary presence of mind by applying the brakes on seeing a horrific sight unveil before him.
The enquiry will be conducted by the Railway safety commissioner of the Western circle.
After struggling on a war-footing with 500 officers and 500 workers managed to restore the Harbour Line from Andheri to CST by 2 pm, and efforts were on to restore the other main lines, Goyal said.
Meanwhile, the stoppage of the Western Railway suburban services have paralysed the city. The department has also predicted rainfall throughout the week.
