Why Apple’s AirPower wireless charger is taking so long to make

The iPhone maker is expected to finally release its wireless charging accessory in September, likely alongside its new iPhone models, Bloomberg reported, citing sources close to the situation.

Apple has announced its new wireless charging device during the release of the iPhone X and Phone 8 previous year, although the company insisted that it will not be available until 2018. However, a new Bloomberg report tells us that the AirPower could go on sale before or in September, according to some company engineers. Testing has purportedly ramped up with engineers using the device as their charger at the office. While a wireless future is desirable, it is hard at this point, to imagine a time when wires become completely obsolete and are not necessary, not even for some light debugging or phone resetting. The device will be created to wirelessly charge up to three devices at once; compatible products include the iPhone X, iPhone 8 models, Apple Watch Series 3 devices, and AirPod earbuds once their rumored wireless charging case comes out. "Apple engineers have also been working to squash bugs related to the on-board firmware, according to the people familiar". In order to be able to place any device anywhere on the mat, multiple charging sensors must be integrated.

Apple's chief designer Jony Ive has long said his eventual goal for the iPhone is for it to be a single piece of glass, but there are obvious technological hurdles that come with such a design.

Apple added wireless charging to its iPhone lineup with the debut of the iPhone X and the iPhone 8/Plus previous year. The company reportedly discussed the possibility of doing this with the iPhone X, but decided that the charging speeds using wires are still much better than what's possible with wireless charging.

Wireless battery chargers don't usually require processors and operating system software to operate.

In a rare move for Apple, it suggested that users buy charging hubs from Mophie and Belkin, instead of selling its own charging accessories.

But many are calling Apple's slow release of AirPower out of character for the company.

Apple's attention to detail is legendary, so I'm not surprised to see this type of delay for a new product.

The AirPower should be released "before or in September", according to a Thursday report.
