But now with the upcoming software update Musk claimed that the update would bring "full self-driving features" to the Tesla's auto would be able to drive itself.
Tesla's vehicles have been involved in several crashes this year and at least two people have died in those crashes.
Tesla electric cars such as the Model S and Model X are known for their sleek looks, hefty price tags and rapid acceleration. Autopilot resources, he said, had so far "rightly focused entirely on safety".
The vehicle's Autopilot system was activated for about 19 minutes before the crash, the NTSB said. Ubergizmo argued that it's unlikely that Tesla's cars can suddenly be transformed into fully autonomous vehicles and that term could simply be a fancy marketing term for new features as opposed to its literal meaning. One posted a video of himself jumping into the rear seat while the vehicle continued to drive on its own.
An electric-powered passenger vehicle sped up before crashing into a previously damaged crash attenuator as it approached a state highway interchange, a preliminary report from the US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) says. It also has the ability to retain its place in a lane.
The latest software update, which started to roll out last week, features a new feature that will increase the number of warnings it gives drivers to take control of the auto.
Tesla has repeatedly said Autopilot is meant to be used with an attentive driver whose hands are on the wheel, but the most visible accidents involving Autopilot have included reports of distracted drivers.
Autopilot in its current form is a driver-assistance system that still requires the driver to pay attention and be ready to take control of the steering wheel. It has continued upgrading the operating system using its capability to send out over-the-air, or OTA, updates to its vehicles. "With V9, we will begin to enable full self-driving features", Musk tweeted on Sunday, referring to the latest version of the Autpilot programme, in response to a Twitter user. The driver followed them until taking his hands off the wheel again.
Tesla intends to make quite a range of vehicles.
As impressive as those specs are, Elon Musk over the weekend hinted that the next-gen Roadster may have a few more tricks up its sleeve. A Tesla representative told the publication that SpaceX and Tesla "are occasionally able to share ideas that help the other". The Tesla product architect revealed that version 9 of Autopilot will aim to fix that issue.
Tesla has received criticism for how it has promoted the feature.
"Not saying the next gen Roadster special upgrade package *will* definitely enable it to fly short hops, but maybe...", Musk later added.
