Trump expanded the tariffs on steel and aluminum to the United Kingdom, Canada and the European Union on May 31 after extending exemptions in March.

Mexico said on Monday it plans to file a complaint against the the World Trade Organization, where it's challenging the imposition of tariffs on its products, specifically a 25 percent charge on its steel and 15 percent charge on its aluminum.

Officials in Brussels, who are leading the member states' response, said nations had given broad support for a plan to set duties on €2.8bn (£2.5bn) of U.S. exports.

"Canada's position is and always has been that the trilateral approach is actually better for Canada, Mexico and the United States".

Trudeau was apparently arguing Canada's loyalty directly to the USA president when Trump fired back about the Burning of Washington.

In addition to the tariff fracas, the two countries remain far apart in negotiations over a new version of the North American Free Trade Agreement, with dwindling prospects of a deal getting done anytime soon.

But Gerard said Trump's policy creates uncertainty for US oil companies.

The Trump administration used national security grounds as justification for the tariffs, invoking a little-used provision of a trade law from 1962.

Roughly three dozen House races are widely seen as competitive this year. Steel exports to the USA also make up more than half of Mexican production.

The White House declined to comment when asked by CNN about the President's remark in reference to the War of 1812. Furthermore, he prefers visiting places where he is feted - such as on his trips a year ago to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia; Beijing and Paris - over attending summits where the attending leaders are treated as equals.

While Trump's top economic adviser, Larry Kudlow, called trade tensions shadowing the summit "a family quarrel", finance ministers from the six other nations issued a rare public rebuke during a preliminary meeting last week, saying they would retaliate against the American tariffs.

Crow said the district's Republican incumbent, Mike Coffman, shares blame in triggering Mexican tariffs. "But we see no sign of that in this action today by the USA administration".

With its presidential election 26 days away, Mexico's government imposed a 20 percent tariff on USA pork, apples and potatoes and 20 to 25 percent tariffs on cheese and bourbon. About 10 percent of the state's milk output comes from Stanislaus County, which is in the 10th congressional district, according to data from the California Department of Agriculture.
