Austrlia vs Peru

Peru coach Ricardo Gareca refused to commit his future to the national team after they bowed out of the World Cup against Australia.

Assuming Australia beats Peru and Denmark loses to France, Australia would still have to earn a higher goal differential than Denmark in order to make it to the next round, and that could be hard since they're down two goals right now.

France topped the group with seven points, with Denmark runners-up on five after the teams played out a 0-0 draw.

Andre Carrillo's 18th-minute goal - a half-volley from inside the area - was Peru's first in a World Cup since its last appearance 36 years ago. "It's important that we get the result which is the main thing", striker Tomi Juric told reporters at the team's training base in Kazan on Sunday.

"In the next game against Australia, we want to give a victory to the fans of Peru who trust us a lot", he said.

"This triumph is for our people and for Jefferson (Farfan)", Guerrero said of his teammate who missed the match after being hospitalized with a head injury sustained in practice last weekend.

Despite their early elimination, Peru has played some impressive attacking football and showed moments of class in their games.

Cahill came on early in the second half but was unable to score the goal that would have seen him join an elite group of players - including Pele and Cristiano Ronaldo - to have found the net at four World Cups. But he had few chances. The match starts at 16:00 on 26 June 2018. The Peruvians, boosted by a loud crowd that heavily outnumbered the Aussies, took advantage of their chances and gave their team an honourable finish after two opening losses.

Australia's best chance to score came in the 27th minute when Tom Rogic made a run through the Peru defence and had his shot saved by goalkeeper Pedro Gallese.

Edison Flores nearly added a third goal on the counter when he crashed a low drive onto the post from the edge of the box in the closing minutes, but the offside flag was raised and there was to be no final flourish for Peru. As the minutes progressed, the counter was working as Peru was giving away the ball in crucial places, allowing its opponent to threaten, who was clearly looking for a win knowing its hope to qualify to the knockout stage was still alive. The Australians ended up with one point after losing 2-1 to France and drawing 1-1 with Denmark. As far as his replacement, the coach offered only that he would "choose the player that will have the most chance to get the result".

Van Marwijk said he expected the French to play for the win given their unconvincing showings in Russian Federation to date.
