Walking Dead actor Andrew Lincoln reportedly leaving season 9

The British star, 44, who plays Rick Grimes on the show, is said to be preparing to walk away after season nine.

According to the writeup, Lincoln is expect to appear in only six episodes of the next season, after which his character will apparently be gone for good.

In breaking the news, Collider hinted Lincoln, who has anchored the show since its debut in 2010, will appear in only six episodes.

The Walking Dead season nine will start later this year.

Also, while the series remains well-watched, it seems to have gone past its peak in popularity, with its ratings dipping to a low not seen since its first season during the most recent run of episodes three months ago.

But it sounds like the next main character to leave the show will be Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln).

When fighting the undead, your days are always going to be numbered.

Season nine looks like it could be a big one for The Walking Dead with series regulars Rick and Maggie both leaving.

As for another beloved character Maggie Rhee, Lauren Cohen is slated to return next season as well, but with her new ABC pilot Whiskey Cavalier being picked up, it may be her final season as well with AMC.

AMC said that they had "no comment" on Lincoln leaving TWD when contacted by Deadline. Riggs' Carl, Rick's son, was killed in the middle of Season 8, while James' Morgan crossed over to spin-off Fear the Walking Dead. In Kirkman's comics, Carl survives well into the chaos of the infected world as does his father, though less a hand - which did not happen on the small screen.

Angela Kang is the showrunner for next season. To find that out, we'll just have to wait until Season 9-which has yet to garner an official premiere date.

With Lincoln's departure, there will be virtually no more original cast members remaining - which I guess is to be expected in a real zombie apocalypse.
