Giuliani, a former New York City mayor and ex-U.S. attorney who joined Trump's legal team last month, said the president had repaid Cohen over several months, indicating the payments continued through at least the presidential transition, if not into his presidency. "So it appears to me that the real concern is that there would be a campaign finance vulnerability on this". "[They] funneled through a law firm, and then the president repaid it".

Giuliani, one of the lawyers helping President Donald Trump navigate the Russian Federation investigation, told Fox News' Sean Hannity the "whole country" will turn on Mueller if he targets the president's oldest daughter. Ty Cobb, the White House lawyer handling the investigation into possible collusion between Trump's campaign and Russian Federation, is being replaced by Emmet Flood, a veteran Washington attorney who was part of the team representing former President Bill Clinton during his impeachment proceedings. He hasn't said whether Trump personally reimbursed him.

"You'll have to ask Michael Cohen".

Giuliani, a former mayor of New York and a former US attorney, later told the New York Times that Cohen had made the payment to Daniels "on his own authority".

"Mr. Trump evidently has participated in a felony and there must be serious consequences for his conduct and his lies and deception to the American people", Avenatti told the Associated Press.

In January, the group Common Cause sent letters to Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein and the Federal Election Commission asking them to investigate the Daniels payment, calling it an illegal in-kind campaign contribution.

Giuliani went on to claim that Trump "didn't know about the specifics about it, as far as I know".

"Michael saw an opportunity to settle it for not very much money, and he took it", Giuliani said.

"The fact is, just trust me", he said, "they're gonna come up with no violations there". That calls into question the original story from Trump and his team, including Cohen's claim that he paid Daniels out of his own pocket.

Trump has said he did not know about the payment to Stormy Daniels, who says she had a one-night stand with Trump in 2006.

Another reporter asked Trump: "Do you know where he got the money to make that payment?" Michael is my attorney.

Giuliani's disclosure also positions the Cohen payment as a loan, potentially creating legal liability for Trump, who would be required to have reported such a loan on his presidential financial disclosures.
