Boston Red Sox outfielder Mookie Betts took little time making an impact in his return to the starting lineup, hitting three home runs against the Kansas City Royals on Wednesday.

The Royals must have wondered what they had to do to get Betts out.

The Red Sox are 21-8 SU and 14-14 ATS.

Danny Duffy will get the nod for the visiting Royals.

"Probably could play today, if there was a righty on the mound", Royals manager Ned Yost said before Tuesday's game against Red Sox left-hander Chris Sale.

Earlier, right-hander Brad Keller showed exactly why the Royals kept the Rule 5 Draft acquisition and believe in his potential as he struck out Hanley Ramirez with a 99-mph heater with the go-ahead run on third base and one out in the seventh inning.

Adding to the power day at Fenway, J.D. Martinez hit his 6th home run.

It was Kimbrel's first blown save of the season, as he came into the game converting 7-out-of-7 chances so far this season.

Despite the lousy weather in April that has home runs across the league down from 2017, the Sox are on pace for 205 after they hit just 168 a year ago. The offense averaged 6.53 runs per game in the blazing start. Their pitching has been very bad, placing last in the Major Leagues with a 5.33 ERA.

Pomeranz is also winless this season, going 0-1 with 7.27 ERA in two starts since coming off the disabled list in late April.

The Sox now have 38 homers on the year; only three teams entered Wednesday with more: the New York Yankees, Los Angeles Angels and Toronto Blue Jays. He threw 16 Minor League innings between Double-A Northwest Arkansas and Triple-A Omaha, giving up 10 hits and two runs, along with seven walks and nine strikeouts.

Pomeranz (1-1) worked six innings, giving up all three of his runs in the first two frames. The first six-game victor in the major leagues this year, Scherzer drove in his second run of the season with a single and scored twice.

Betts went 4-for-4, three RBI and three runs scored. Duffy carries a 5.40 ERA right now as well as a 1.45 WHIP.

0-7 in Duffy's last 7 starts. Boston has covered the spread only twice in its last seven games and the total has gone under in four of those seven. He's up to 11 homers on the season, but was quick to deflect credit for his fast start. They won their first 13 in a row, got to 20-and-3 on May 2, then promptly lost 12 straight.
