U.S. News and World Report recognized St. Charles North for its 99 percent graduation rate, 45 percent math proficiency in which students meet or exceed state standards and 50 percent student reading proficiency.
None of Mississippi's 250 public high schools earned gold medal status, but Ocean Springs was one of only three in the state to earn a silver medal and the only one from Jackson County to do so. The rankings are based on the school's performance on state assessments and how well they prepare students for college.
Boston Latin School came in first in the state, followed by Advanced Math and Science Academy Charter School in Marlborough and Mystic Valley Regional Charter School in Malden. Total minority enrollment at the school was 12 percent. However, just because so few Bay State schools made the upper echelon of the national list doesn't mean they're not doing well.
The initial field of 28,813 public high schools was cut down to about 20,000.
"The hard work, dedication, and commitment to high-quality education that is shown on a daily basis as you walk through the hallways and classrooms of both our high schools are what makes Sylvania an unbelievable place to call home and raise a family", he said.
School Committee Chairman Robert Vaughan also expressed appreciation "that we have been recognized again for the great things being done in our schools".
"It's a well-deserved recognition for Lenox teachers and staff", Lee said.
The report recognized 72 Colorado schools as among the best high school schools, including 11 gold medal schools, 31 silver medal school and 30 bronze medal schools. BASIS is a charter management organization that operates tuition-free charter schools in the United States, with schools primarily based in Arizona.
