Announced May 1 by Leslie Odom Jr. and Katharine McPhee not far from Broadway, the list of 2018 Tony nominees was led by two new musicals, "SpongeBob SquarePants" and "Mean Girls", both receiving 12 nods.
Nominations are about to begin in NY for the 72nd Annual Tony Awards - the full list of 2018 nominees is scheduled to be announced beginning at 7:30 a.m. CST by hosts Katharine McPhee (the singer making her Broadway debut in "Waitress") and Leslie Odom, Jr.
While Shuck was not individually nominated, three cast members received nominations, including Jamie Parker for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Play.
Tony Kushner's "Angels in America" earned a nod for best revival of a play, a category in which it will square off against Edward Albee's "Three Tall Women, " Kenneth Lonergan's "Lobby Hero, " and Eugene O'Neill's "The Iceman Cometh".
The Band's Visit, a heart-warming musical about Egyptian musicians visiting Israel, Angels In America, set against the 1980s Aids crisis, and a revival of Rogers and Hammerstein's Carousel all scooped 11 nominations apiece.
Top play nominees may include "Harry Potter and the Cursed Child", "The Children", "Meteor Shower", "Farinelli and the King" and "Junk".
While Murin and her co-stars were overlooked by this year's other nominees, Frozen did manage to secure two additional nominations outside of the Best Musical race with Jennifer Lee receiving a nom in the Best Book of a Musical category and Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez securing a nomination for Best Original Score (Music and/or Lyrics) Written for the Theater. The Tonys are presented by the Broadway League and the American Theatre Wing.
The 72nd annual Tony Awards, hosted by Josh Groban and Sarah Bareilles, will be broadcast on Sunday, June 10 at 8 p.m. on CBS2.
