Kentucky Derby victor Justify draws 7th post for Preakness

This isn't as far-fetched of a prediction as it would be for the Kentucky Derby given the smaller field, but with Justify entering the Preakness as the overwhelming favorite, there's still room for horses with long odds to produce a shock. Expected post time is 6:20 p.m. ET Saturday.

Quip, who skipped the Kentucky Derby after a second-place finish in the Arkansas Derby, was made the third choice at 12-1 after drawing the first post.

Two horses disappointed in the Kentucky Derby will try to turn the tables on Justify - sixth-placed Derby finisher Bravazo and eighth-placed Lone Sailor. Diamond King (30-1) 5.

This will be the second time that Baffert and Smith have been on the same team in the Preakness.

Justify showed no signs of being troubled by the heel bruise that was discovered the day after he won the Derby on May 5. He's won all four of his career starts, all over the past 17 weeks. (Oh, those hats!) Sure, the fashion at The Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs transcends horse racing in many ways, but there's no denying that "The Fastest Two Minutes in Sports" remains the most prestigious horse race of them all.

The Derby victor arrived in Baltimore on Wednesday afternoon after a flight from Kentucky, where he had been based since his victory on May 5. "He shipped really well", Baffert said. The Preakness Stakes horse race is scheduled to take place Saturday, May 19. There's a good chance Justify's Derby experience helps him again in those conditions, Zipse said.

Fittingly enough, all that changed barely an hour later when it came time for the unbeaten beast that is Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve (G1) victor Justify to take his first spin around the track. Baffert said he kept the workout light because of the conditions.

Baffert's next Triple Crown race win, which could occur in two weeks at the Preakness, will be his 14th, tying him with D. Wayne Luckas for the most all time. He was just getting warmed up. So I could tell, by the way he was dragging me around there, he's on his game.

"We've got a top jockey and the horse is doing really well", co-owner Chuck Zacney said.

Within minutes of their arrival at Pimlico Race Course, Kentucky Derby victor Justify and his trainer circled the stakes barn at a rapid clip. And past year Senior Investment finished third at 31-1 (with Cloud Computing the upset victor at 13-1). And the morning line odds were set following Wednesday's post draw.

"I'd hate to see something like that, because that's the worst I've ever seen", he said. "We should be close early".

Justify will face seven challengers in his bid to win the second jewel of the Triple Crown.

And we're trying to keep this relatively simple anyway, so forget the horizontals.

"As we're dragging (the floats), they compress what we call the cushion - what the sand is and what the horses run on - and that makes it as tight as it can possibly get", Bosley said.

So if you feel Justify and Good Magic stand alone ahead of the rest of them and you're looking for a longshot to put in the exotics, Sporting Chance could give you a run for your money.
