Wayne Rooney is set to leave Everton this summer and move to Major League Soccer after reaching "an agreement in principle" to join DC United.

Reports on Wednesday claimed Rooney's representatives had held discussions with MLS about a possible move which would see him earn £12.5m.

The former England captain left Manchester United to return to his boyhood club Everton a year ago, but his form has gone downhill over the last few months.

The 32-year-old now plays for Everton in the English Premier League but is said to want to leave the club once the season comes to an end Sunday. True to form, he is also Everton's top scorer, having put away 11 goals this season.

"I really enjoyed him at Everton, he was very young then, and at Manchester United he helped me a lot".

That has left Rooney - along with other members of the Everton squad - in limbo as they can not get assurances from Allardyce about their future.

However, the contract is yet to be signed and Sam Allardyce's precarious position at Everton means Rooney could be convinced to stay on at Goodison Park.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic took a monster pay cut to join LA Galaxy from United recently and so too should Rooney.

A report in the Washington Post this week said there have been serious talks between Rooney and DC United, with a transfer fee of around £12million suggested.

The capital club are said to be planning on making heavy investment in the playing squad during the transfer window, fuelled by prospective income from their new Audi Field stadium, which opens in July.

But he could face the axe after Everton's final game of the season against West Ham on Sunday as fans have been left frustrated by the style of football under the ex-England boss. "I wouldn't consider anything on the cards".
